Cabbage's version (2008)
RicePigeon's second version (2016)
Kanako Yasaka is a shinto goddess from Touhou Project. She first appeared as both the Final boss and the Extra Stage midboss in Mountain of Faith. She later appears, alongside Suwako, as summonable assists for Sanae in Hisoutensoku.
Kanako is the current goddess of the Moriya Shrine after she defeated Suwako Moriya 3000 years ago in the Great Suwa War. For a goddess, she places little importance on tradition and loves technological revolutions. Prior to the events of Mountain of Faith, humans of the outside world began to lose faith in gods such as herself. In a last-ditch effort for survival, Kanako had the Moriya Shrine transported to Gensokyo where she was more likely to receive faith. During her effort to gather the faith of Gensokyo, she saw the Hakurei Shrine as a potential obstacle, and so she sent her priestess Sanae Kochiya to shut it down, which led to the events of Mountain of Faith. After the issue with the Hakurei shrine was resolved, Kanako attempted to spark a technological revolution by introducing nuclear energy to Gensokyo. She tried to accomplish this by giving Utsuho Reiuji the power of nuclear fusion, only for the plan to backfire when Utsuho's simple-mindedness caused her to misunderstand Kanako's intentions, using her newfound nuclear powers to try to take over Gensokyo instead.
In M.U.G.E.N, Kanako was first made by Cabbage, then later released with updated sprites. The second version's sprites were later used by other authors including Shiroto and RicePigeon.
RicePigeon's first version
Haughty and imposing; such a description of Kanako has never been more true than this version of the Moriya shrine goddess. When you have an extremely effective zoning fighter that can easily put the pressure on the opponent with relative ease and little to no drawbacks, who needs danmaku projectiles? Kanako might as well be the final boss of an SNK fighting game.
The avatar of lakes and mountains returns to the fray sporting a retooled moveset that still primarily focuses on zoning, but has been significantly toned down to be better balanced. Kanako appears to have put on some weight, as evidenced by a larger hitbox, a higher Life value and significiantly reduced movement speed; despite this, Kanako still dominantes when it comes to aerial mobility options.
