Frankenspriting is a method of sprite creation that involves the use of pre-existing sprites.
As the name implies, Frankenspriting involves cutting pieces of one or more pre-existing sprites and juxtaposing them together to create a new sprite. Frankenspriting can be used to either create new sprites and animations for pre-existing characters, or to create an entirely new character in a certain sprite style. Some basic examples of frankenspriting include:
- Replacing the head of one character's sprite with the head of another character's sprite, commonly referred to as 'headswapping'.
- Splicing the animation of a character's standing attacks with the character's aerial animations to create an aerial version of the same attack.
