Origin

EarthBound/MOTHER

Giygas is the primary antagonist of both EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound. He is an extraterrestrial being who intends to sentence all of reality to the horror of infinite darkness.

Giygas was originally an extraterrestrial known as Giegue (In Japan only as Gyiyg), who was raised by a human named Maria. When Giegue later discovers that humans had studied his race's PSI power, he begins an invasion of Earth. He is later confronted by Maria's grandson, Ninten, and becomes conflicted between his feelings for Maria and continuing his invasion. His guilt for Maria ultimately causes him to become unstable, his own power destroying his own being and turning him into Giygas. As Giygas, he becomes irrational and incapable of thought while possessing power that threatens the universe itself. During the events of EarthBound, Pokey Minch attempts to take advantage of Giygas's power for himself while Giygas remains completely unaware of the havoc his power causes.

In M.U.G.E.N, Giygas has been made by fhqwhgads7 and The_None, with both versions serving as boss characters in their own right. The_None's version has been edited by various creators.

Fhqwhgads7's version[]

Fhqwhgads7 giygas anim

Fhqwhgads7's Giygas is a challenging boss character to most opponents and can easily defeat some of the strongest opponents if they do not get the technique right. There are two battle styles for this Giygas, one only available for Arcade mode and the other for the rest.

Arcade Mode[]

When in Arcade mode and you come against this version of Giygas, you come to a boss story-like battle which includes battling through three different stages.

First Stage

After your character intro finished, Porky (a character from Earthbound) will appear and talk to the player; he will talk about Giygas being unable to think rationally anymore due to his mind being destroyed by his own power. He also mentions that you are another meal to Giygas and leaves you to battle him. When fighting Giygas, the entire stage represents him; in order to defeat him, your main objective is to deal enough damage to K.O. him. However, this can be hard due to him having a high Life stat and the fact that you can't see both the Power and Life bar to see how far you have to go.

Porky

Porky as seen in Giygas story mode battle

Second Stage

When you defeat the first stage of the battle, Porky will re-appear but this time will start to mock you: he will try to make you scared about the events that are about to happen during the remaining stages. Afterwards, the next round will start with Giygas in his second form. This time, however, you must not attack Giygas. Instead, you have to defend against his attacks and remain crouched so that the screen fades out for a short period of time; eventually, you will progress onto the final stage.

Third Stage

After the screen fades away and the background changes, you have reached the third and the final stage. In this stage, you will still have to use the technique from the last one. When you crouch long enough and the screen fades away a certain number of times, you will get a message that ndicates that you have nearly defeated Giygas. Keep crouching and defending until the second message appears, which indicates when Giygas can be defeated by the F1 key. The player must press this button in order to win the match, or else they will be trapped in an endless game until their lifebar empties completely.

Other Modes[]

When you play or battle against Giygas is in any other mode (eg, vs mode, training, etc...) you will be restricted to battle with Giygas' first form. Unlike the Arcade mode battle, you can see his health bar. From what can be seen, he can automatically charge his Power and Life over time. Also, all of his attacks cost Power, however, the charge rate should be enough to overpower this. When Giygas is fighting with a partner, he will be immune to any damage until his ally gets knocked out.

Playing as Giygas[]

When this Giygas is downloaded, he will already be set for story mode making him uncontrollable by the player, in order for him to become controllable, you will have to turn this mode off via Giygas' configure settings. When off, you will now be able to use all of his moves.

The_None's version[]

TNgiygas stand

This version of Giygas has many moves and animations intended to be purposefully disturbing and/or scary. His second round intro shows a random character, including Maherl, Sanzou, T.J. Combo, Daigo, Moses, Rody, Youmu Konpaku and Alessi, standing in his place before being replaced by a jumpscare. Winquotes include weird phrases, and his win animations are a series of bizarre and frightening images.

Gameplay[]

When you enter the stage of your choice, the first thing you will notice is that on the left-hand corner of the screen is a custom lifebar representing the player's Life and Power, however, Giygas' bar isn't shown, instead the background becomes darker the less health Giygas has.

The custom lifebar also shows warnings of Giygas' attacks but in the form of red triangular signs with a small picture roughly warning what is about to take place.

Giygas is a barely visible ball that looks like the Devil's Machine during the fight with Giygas and Porky in the original Earthbound. This is what must be struck to be damaged. This character can be player-controlled, however, the A.I. for the character is very brutal and well programmed. Due to the various images flashing on the screen, and the second round static, it can make discerning and locating this ball nearly impossible, save for the fact the camera follows it like any character on the field, and the player character faces in Giygas direction. Unlike most fighters for Mugen, Giygas is not restricted to the ground and can float around the stage freely.

Giygas is a six-button character with 1 attack for each button, sometimes used in conjunction with a direction.

Attacks:

Teleport:

Giygas does not have a standard taunt like most characters and instead has a Teleport move bound to Start instead. It moves Giygas a short distance away from where he was originally.

THE ORIGINAL Attack / Wave/Snake Attack:

Upon pressing X large ring appears from the background and attacks the entire screen, it's unblockable and does little damage.

Pressing X along with Left, Right, or Up will turn the attack into a Wave which travels along the top or bottom of the screen in the direction pressed or downwards in the middle of the screen with Up. Unlike THE ORIGINAL Attack, they are easily avoidable however Giygas can spawn multiple directions to all be active on the screen at once.

Doing Left, Down-Left, Down, Down-Right, Right and then X will instead activate a Snake Attack that is similar to the Wave attack only it moves in a zig-zag pattern and bounces back and forth from both sides of the screen, again it is unblockable.

Reflector / Fist of Darkness:

Pressing and Holding Y Giygas becomes surrounded by a ring, upon being hit with any projectile (as long as it's coded as a projectile), it will connect but soon after Giygas will automatically counter attack with a fast fullscreen shockwave.

Pressing Y and Holding Left will turn Giygas into a forward move Hand of Darkness that "Tickles" the opponent with low damage multihits. In the Second Phase this turns into The World and does more damage.

Pressing Y along with Right will turn Giygas into a Hand of Darkness that instantly moves the opposite side of the screen as the opponent before suddenly launching a powerful punch attack that does a bunch of damage if not blocked.

Minigames:

Giygas is unique in that instead of a standard attack, he can trap the opponent in a minigame that if not beaten fast enough will end the match in a brutal death for the opponent, pressing Z will turn Giygas into a large spiral that slowly moves forward to grab opponents, it's roughly the size of his hitbox but you can hit him to interrupt it. Winning any minigame will reward the opponent with a small amount of health returned.

Games:

The type of Minigame is chosen at random, all have different methods of beating them.

  • Midknight's Fatality: The Belgrave Square Labs Tunnel

Straight from Eternal Champions, unlike in the original game the opponent is falling much faster towards the saws that will insta-kill them if they don't press the correct corresponding button showcased on screen. Get 3 right to win, but mess one up and have to start over.

In Phase 2 the controls on the screen will switch quickly meaning to be faster to hit the correct one.

[Note: you do not need a 6 button character to beat the minigame. The buttons will be active regardless.]

Midknight's Sudden Death: The Belgrave Square Labs Fryer

Also straight from Eternal Champions, unlike in the original game the opponent is stuck in a dizzy state while they are tasked to repeatedly spam LeftRight quickly to escape before it starts cooking them alive very quickly.

Volleyball:

Starting in a pitch black room, a ball will soon fall from the top of the screen requiring the opponent to hit it back off the top of the screen before it touches the ground. The more it gets hit but not sent back off the top of the screen the heavier it gets, and if it touches the ground the opponent is crushed in a large jaw.

In Phase 2 the ball moves erratically and is automatically heavier needing a strong attack to send it off the top of the screen.

SHOOTING:

Starting in a dark forest, the opponent is replaced with Doomguy's arm and a pistol with 21 bullets. Pressing X fires the gun while Y only punches.

After all 21 bullets have been expended the gun will only click and do nothing.

The minigame requires the opponent to fight a certain amount of enemies and survive to end it, the enemies are as follows.

  1. Imp: From DOOM the Imp walks from the darkness towards the screen to start swiping the screen to do a low amount of damage, a single punch or a bullet will defeat it.
  2. Pinky: Also from DOOM the Pinky is faster and more erratic than the Imp and moves left and right while moving towards the screen to bite at it and do small but rapid damage, it requires two shots or punches to defeat it.
  3. Shadow Dude: A tall hard to see lanky figure slowly moves towards the screen, upon reaching the screen it insta-kills the opponent and ends the match, it only needs a single bullet or punch to defeat.
  4. Jitterskulls: From Ghoul's Forest 3, a DOOM WAD, are faithful as it teleports from the darkness closer and closer to the screen, upon reaching the screen they start their quick insta-kill attack that ends the match, it only needs a single bullet or punch to send it back into the darkness.
  5. Hol Horse: From JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, he quickly appears from the side of the screen and if not quickly defeated will shoot out the screen with his Stand Emperor, causing a long cutscene to play out where his ally, J. Geil's Stand, Hanged Man insta-kills the opponent, it's long enough to let other enemies finish the job as well. Unlike most of the other enemies, Hol Horse is rarely in punching distance, meaning it's required to save bullets in case Hol Horse shows up.
  6. Sniper: From Team Fortress 2, a Red dot appears at the top of the screen, indicating The Sniper is aiming, it is not punchable but instead shootable and once shot will make go out. if not shot once the dot fades away an arrow will come from the darkness and impale the opponent, slowly draining health and disabling the Punch attack, instead replacing it with an animation of ripping the arrow out, once finished the punch attack is reenabled.
  7. SLENDERSHAQ: SlenderShaq stands way in the back in the darkness, barely visible but with an audible sound cue, in contrast to the other enemies it is required to NOT attack SlenderShaq whatsoever, otherwise the screen will fill with static as SlenderShaq teleports closer. If attacked enough to come to the screen SlenderShaq will insta-kill the opponent. If not attacked for long enough SlenderShaq will vanish on its own.

The enemies are faster and more relentless in the second phase, with occasional static to distract the opponent.

Maid Game:

In a dark hallway the opponent is left with a bunch of Hisui clones pacing back and forth, the majority of them are faceless while one of them still has her face. The opponent is required to attack the Hisui with a face before too much time passes. Attacking one of the faceless clones will lead to an insta-kill and the end of the match. Waiting too long to attack the correct Hisui will cause a large Ao One monster with the head of the late John McCain (from the Flash game Arise 2) to march through with on contact will insta-kill the opponent.

The Phase 2 Variant of the Maid Game has static fill the screen which switches which Hisui has a face, also shortening the time before Ao McCain appears.

Don't Close, Don't Open Too Wide:

In a dark closet the opponent is cornered by an Ao Oni, requiring the opponent to lightly tap down to keep the doors of the closet slightly open but not too wide open to keep the Ao Oni at bay. If the door closes, the Ao Oni will yank the doors open and insta-kill the opponent, and if the doors are too wide open the Ao Oni will open them the rest of the way.

In Phase 2 the doors are a lot more strict on what is considered "too wide," making the game vastly more difficult to survive.

Wall of Darkness / Hand of Darkness:

Pressing A will cause a large wall of darkness to be created from the both the left and right sides of the screen.

Pressing the A button while holding Left or Right will make a slightly larger wall of darkness from the side of the screen corresponding to the direction, same if you hold Up where it will come from the top of the screen, however pressing Down will instead make a Hand of Darkness from the bottom of the screen that tracks the opponent for a short time before closing and sinking back down, the attack ends after the player either gets grabbed by the attack, or when it fades away, the Hand of Darkness can be attacked to disable it faster.

The Hand/Wall of Darkness upon being the final blow will replace the opponent's sprite with that of a corpse before the match ends.

PSI Table:

Pressing B will make a small white orb shoot out from Giygas and launch towards the general direction of the opponent.

If the opponent is hit by the orb, then it will begin flashing a series of words across it including Freeze (misspelled as "freze,") Fire, Hypnosis (abbreviated as "Hypno,"), Flash, Starstorm (abbreviated as "Storm"), Magnet, Rockin, and Mindfuck. The box is a roulette, and the end result is based on what is selected, the box does 2 damage, and the table box has a hitbox to disable it before a PSi Attack is activated.

  • Freze (Freeze): spawns at the current location of the opponent and can be blocked or easily avoided, if hit, the opponent is frozen for a short time while having a small amount of damage, leaving them open for other attacks.
  • Fire: spawns at roughly the current location of the opponent and can be blocked or avoided, if hit, it does a decent amount of damage and knock back.
  • Hypno (Hypnosis): spawns at the current location of the opponent and can be blocked or easily avoided, if hit, the opponent will fall to the floor and be open to attack.
  • Flash: A fullscreen attack that can be blocked but not avoided, it does a random amount of damage to none and puts the opponent into a inescapable dizzy state if not blocked, leaving the opponent open to any attack.
  • Storm (Starstorm): from the top of the screen a bunch of stars will fall from the sky and do heavy damage and knock back that can combo into each other if not blocked.
  • Magnet: spawns at the current location of the opponent and can be blocked or easily avoided, if hit, it does a small amount of damage but instead saps power up to a full bar.
  • Rockin: A full screen attack with a long build up, the entire attack is unavoidable but can be blocked in it's entirety, if hit it launches the opponent towards the top of the screen doing a ton of damage.
  • Mindfuck will assault the screen with various distracting scenarios.

Mindfucks:

The type of Mindfuck is chosen at random and can last to a random amount of time though always short, none of them can kill the opponent and only meant to distract, confuse, or hinder. Each one has a chance of simply flashing the screen to indicate the mindfuck is over or spawning a jumpscare of spengebab.

  • Fake Wall of Darkness: A large Wall of Darkness covers the entire screen and grabs any it touches first, however as soon as the attack ends the opponent has taken no damage.
  • INVISIBILITY: Giygas, along with any current attacks on screen at the moment it goes off are all turned invisible though the camera still follows Giygas as he moves around, making it difficult to attack or avoid for a short period of time.
  • BLACKOUT: The screen is blacked out with all sounds being muted as well before returning with a small flash of light, occasionally the battle will not actually be paused during the mindfuck meaning Giygas is still capable of attacking during it.
  • HEALTHDROP: The opponent is stuck in place taking constant damage until suddenly with a flash of light they are returned to normal with their health set back to whatever was before.
  • FANTASTIC: A giant smiling face comes from one side of the screen before disappearing upon contact.
  • Values Dissonance: The custom Health Bar at the top left displays incorrect information such as the higher health the opponent has the lower it will appear on the bar.
  • Hyper Move Protection: Initially it doesn't seem to do anything unless the opponent connects a Super or Hyper attack against Giygas, which will cause it to suddenly replace the opponent with a corpse as blood splatters the screen and a fake K.O appears on screen, the healthier reflecting this fakeout with being set to 0, before a flash of light and the fight continuing as normal.

Headcrabs:

Pressing C Giygas can summon headcrabs from the Half-Life game series. They jump and hit the player repeatedly until struck once. During round 1, only 1 can be onscreen, while during round 2, 2 can be onscreen. Giygas does not control the Headcrabs themselves and they cannot be player controlled.

These guys can be hard to deal with, as the player character will focus on Giygas, sometimes making hitting the headcrab extremely difficult.

First Phase:

The match begins with Giygas being released from The Capsule (implied to be the Devil's Machine.) Giygas, being barely visible and able to fly around the stage and having plenty of area denial makes him a tough match, bizarrely Giygas is able to be grabbed and put into custom states, but they do not prevent Giygas from using attacks.

It's recommended when choosing a stage to battle against The_None Giygas, that you avoid picking a stage with a black background as you may find it more difficult to see where his darkness attacks are, and also avoid picking particularly tall stages as it will make hitting him more difficult.

When Giygas is at low health he has a chance of using a Pissed Off attack that is a combination of 3 random attacks at once.

Second Phase:

The second Phase of the battle is very similar to the first stage, the main difference however is that the background of the stage will start to change similar to the third stage of fhqwhgads7 Giygas. As well as this, his attack rate increases and occasionally the screen will start to fuzz similar to TV static making it harder to see the stage and Giygas' attacks. The minigame traps are harder and when low on health Giygas will use PK attacks without the dialogue box, instead opting to immediately use them instantly, making it especially tough to manage alongside the rest of its attacks.

Also when low enough on health, you'll hear the sound of a horde of zombies with Giygas unleashing one of 3 rage attacks: all PSI attacks at once + Mindfuck, multiple hands of darkness, and multiple uses of "some attack", be aware that while he is unleashing one of those 3 rage attacks, his health will start to regenerate very slowly making it take longer to KO him.

When Giygas is finally defeated the screen will completely fuzz out until the screen shuts off similar to turning off a CRT TV screen.

Trivia (The_None's Giygas)[]

  • Interestingly, Giygas is coding to respond to the opponent taunting, depending on the state that they have their taunt in, there is a chance for Giygas to take significant damage as they're doing so, in reference to in EarthBound he is defeated by human emotion.
  • A.I. characters caught in The_None Giygas minigames usually will not be able to escape easily, barring The Lab Fryer; the A.I. will often repeatedly punch and never hit anything during the Shooting game, fail the button sequences during the pit, and usually fail the volleyball minigame when alone (though teams have a possibility of clearing it), while the Hisui minigame is completely random and based on whether the A.I. character just so happens to strike the right Hisui by total accident.
    • The scream heard when grabbed by the Wall/Hand of Darkness is from Prince of Darkness, the clip can be seen here.
    • One of the win animations Giygas has is a recreation of a youtube video, the sound used is also from the original video.
    • The Spengebab screamer Giygas uses is from an old youtube video.

Trivia[]

  • fhqwhgads7's Giygas Starstorm attack is unblockable.
  • Giygas appears if Stickman14's Luigi successfully KOs the opponent with his Raging Demon hyper.
  • Giygas face appears in Neo Meep140's intro when you start a match with him.
