It seems that this character is based on his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl but it isn't. His Pokémon lacks jump and block, but they can easily perform combos without giving opponents a chance to attack, and his A.I. sometimes doesn't switch Pokémon which makes opponents unable to defeat him normally.
Pokémon Trainer is a five-button character which Ⓐ, Ⓑ, Ⓧ, Ⓨ attack are for his Pokémon's special attacks, Ⓒ is for switching Pokémon, and Ⓩ is for Triple Finish. Pokémon Trainer functions similarly to his Super Smash Bros. Brawl counterpart in that he himself does not attack and can't be attacked, but instead uses his three Pokémon (Ivysaur, Squirtle and Charizard) to do so, and opponents must defeat his Pokémon to decrease his life (Defeating one of his Pokémon deal with 1/3 of his life); all three Pokémon can be switched between freely, though once a Pokémon has been K.O.'d, it cannot be switched in until the next round. It is possible to exploit an error in the character that makes the current Pokémon vanish from the screen, by pressing Ⓩ while holding . The player then needs to mash the buttons to reappear on the screen as Ivysaur (this won't work if Ivysaur has fainted).
It should be noted that because Pokémon Trainer is the root character, the A.I. opponent may occasionally try to attack him as opposed to the Pokémon. And some attacks with will home Pokemon Trainer instead of homing his Pokémon. Also, due to lack of jumping ability and lack of air attack, his Pokémon can't attack opponents on air by any ways. However, easy combos can be performed by using Solarbeam frequently, which makes opponents almost have no chance to fight back. Due to the main target being his Pokémon and the Pokémon will always stand near the opponents, both the Pokémon and opponents can perform the first hit easily.
His A.I. doesn't attack frequently so that his Pokémon is almost a punch bag. His A.I. is unable to switch his Pokémon, so it'll always be stuck with Ivysaur, even when defeated. Also, A.I. won't use the specials and hyper frequently, making Pokémon Trainer a totally bug character.
