Aside from the prominent visual upgrades, Mike's second Yoshi does away with some of the fire-based attacks present in the first Yoshi and gives the character two charge attacks; a significant number of the character's move activations have been remapped to coincide with the transition from six-button to four-button gameplay.
Yoshi is a four-button character with a mix of regular and charge motions, contrasting the six-button system of the previous version; despite the lower button count, the gameplay system manages to be more refined. It is a bit harder to use because it doesn't have air projectiles, projectile counter, or button dodges, but still has the recovery rolls.

Trivia[]
Yoshi has a number of unused attacks that are otherwise perfectly functional, as well as a significant amount of unused guarding and dodging based moves.
The EX version of ParaYoshi Charge would fly in a straight line trajectory and travel a further distance compared to the regular version, as well as using 500 Power similar to Yoshi's other EX moves, though its activation would have been identical to that of the regular version.
Yoshi Rush would have been a Hyper Combo-esque attack that used 1000 Power and was activated with Ⓧ / Ⓨ, though it had a tremendous amount of endlag should the move have missed or be blocked by an opponent.
Large Egg Toss would have been a projectile Hyper that used 1000 Power and was activated with Ⓧ / Ⓨ; despite the attack having hitboxes on the egg while Yoshi was spinning it, the move otherwise had a lot of startup time and the projectile didn't travel very far, which is a possible reason as to why it was replaced with the similar Egg Launcher.
Yoshi has another unused attack in Egg Trap, though it appears to be incomplete due to Yoshi disappearing when it is used.
