Despite what the name might suggest, CvS Axel does not play much like Capcom vs. SNK at all, instead having a rather bare-bones moveset and sluggish combo ability. Due to its flaws, it is a rather infamous version of the character, alongside being the basis of other notorious characters following it.

CvS Axel is a six-button character, using A, B, or C for kicks and X, Y, or Z for punches. The strength of an attack depends on the button pressed, although similarities between Axel's Normals only make this visible by attack speed and damage output. All of his light Normals, activated with X and A, come out on the first frame, making them unblockable if the opponent is at the corner, while his harder Normals come out 10 more frames after the first, depending on the button pressed. Despite his name, CvS Axel is not resemblent of the Capcom vs. SNK games at all, lacking key mechanics like the Groove system of the games and their sub-mechanics (such as dodges, varying jump levels, or parrying). The only similarities Axel has to any mechanics found in the games are in the engine default movements of running forwards (Right Right) and hopping backwards (Left Left) and his button layout.

CvS Axel has a rather simplistic combo system, being able to cancel any standing or crouching Normal into any of his Specials or super golpes (Down, Down-Right, Right Down, Down-Right, Right A, B, or C). CvS Axel can also chain his Normals in a linear way, but due to the varying speed of his Normals, the chains will not likely connect. Alongside this, he is able to juggle from any Normal that knocks down, including his crouching C and aerial Normals, but his options are rather limited due to the similarities and low speed of his other Normals. CvS Axel has some rather strangely placed hitboxes, with an example being his standing A, B, or C Normals, which have hitboxes placed well below his leg despite it kicking upward. Axel's walking and running animations are missing hurtboxes for the majority of their duration, meaning CvS Axel can walk through opponents' attacks if timed correctly.

CvS Axel does not have a large moveset, only having one Special and two misattributed moves likely intended to be Hypers. misiles is CvS Axel's first Special, which is a simple projectile that has a varying speed depending on the button pressed. It can also be linked into itself due to its lack of recovery time, which can result in an infinite if timed well. super misiles is a variant on misiles that, as the name suggests, fires four projectiles instead of just one, but lacks the ability to control the speed of the projectiles and costs 1000 Power. super golpes, which is misattributed as a Normal, is a simple barrage of melee attacks, though it is difficult to make all of the attack's hits connect due to the knockback caused by earlier hits in the move.

CvS Axel uses M.U.G.E.N's default A.I., meaning it tends to jump and walk around the stage and attack infrequently. While this doesn't make him particularly challenging to beat, his inflated Life and Defence stats make CvS Axel take a while to K.O.
