The Hill of the Ancients is a location in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team that is situated atop the Great Canyon; it is here that an Xatu sees into the past, present and future by staring into the sun, as well as being capable of communicating with any Pokémon in the world via telepathy. During the events of the game, Xatu not only informs the player character that they were originally a human, but there is a meteor heading towards the planet on a direct collision course. During the final part of the game's main story, the player character and their partner return to the Hill of the Ancients so that they can teleport to Sky Tower and ask Rayquaza to destroy the meteor.

In M.U.G.E.N, Hill of the Ancients has been made by Kung Fu Man and Excahm; both versions are rips of the stage from Pokemon Type: Wild, though Excahm's version has various adjustments such as the addition of a bloom lighting effect. Curiously, Kung Fu Man's version is called Grand Canyon while Excahm's version is called The Great Canyon, despite Great Canyon being the name of the dungeon that precedes the Hill of the Ancients.

Kung Fu Man's version is a near-direct rip from the Pokémon Type: Wild fangame, where the combatants fight on the Hill of the Ancients behind Xatu, who is staring into the sunset; the only visual additions between this stage and the original are the shadow that trails behind Xatu and the sun glare effect that goes off to the right. A flock of three Murkrow will periodically fly by in the background, though unlike the original stage in Pokémon Type: Wild, they do not make crowing noises.

Excahm's version uses assets from Pokémon Type: Wild, though there some noticeable changes to the stage that differentiate it from a direct rip, with the most notable change being that the foreground elements and the mountains in the background appear to have been zoomed out, while the sky and sun appear to have been zoomed in slightly; Xatu's shadow is also slightly shorter to compensate for this. The stage has a bloom lighting effect, which gives both the stage elements and the fighters a slightly faded aesthetic.

The download actually comes with 2 versions of the stage: one has a standard 4:3 resolution (PKM_The_Great_Canyon), while the other has a widescreen 16:9 resolution that is natively supported by M.U.G.E.N 1.0 (PKM_The_Great_CanyonWS).
