Metal Mario is the metal form of Mario, first appearing in Super Mario 64 as a powerup when Mario grabs a Metal Cap. Later entries in the Mario series would depict Metal Mario as being his own separate entity to Mario, with the first occurrence of this being Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, where he was an unlockable playable character. Metal Mario is considered to be a rival to Mario, speaking different phrases and having a voice that's almost identical to Mario's, but sounds as if it's had an underwater filter applied to it.
Metal Mario's very first appearance as his own entity was in the original Super Smash Bros., where he's the penultimate boss of Classic Mode and appears on a non-selectable stage called Meta Crystal, which is based on the Cavern of the Metal Cap side level from Super Mario 64. Metal Mario would return in Super Smash Bros. Melee as the penultimate boss of Adventure Mode, where he is instead fought on Battlefield and eventually joined by Metal Luigi once Luigi has been unlocked as a playable character.
In M.U.G.E.N, Metal Mario has been made by various creators.
N64Mario & TMasta's version[]
This character has similar gameplay to the same creator's Pocket Mario, but has more metal attributes to make it feel heavy and clunky, just like the source game.

An incredibly odd Japanese-made Metal Mario. It may seem like an edit of a particular version of everybody's favorite plumber, but it's a mostly new creation aside from the sprites. This character is very cheap as a result of being able to damage opponents by simply ramming into them, so its readme file title translation of "Invincible Metal Mario" might not be mere boasting...
