Despite being referred to as "Super Smash Bros Melee Pikachu" by both its creator and its internal name, it plays very little like Super Smash Bros. Melee's incarnation of Pikachu, bearing resemblance only in its attack animations; not even its sound effects are from Melee, or any Super Smash Bros. game for that matter.

Pikachu is at best a five-button character, using all but C when standing, though when in the air, it only uses three buttons (X, Y and Z, and when crouching, it only uses a single button (X); by technical extension, however, the character actually uses all six buttons, but those that don't appear to activate any attacks merely add Power to the meter. Though the creator states that the character is based on Pikachu's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee, its gameplay mechanics do not reflect this at all, with the only noticeable similarities being the animations for its attacks and the Special Move, thunder, which effectively acts the same as it does in Super Smash Bros. Melee, dealing heavy damage and sending the opponent upwards.

Pikachu's comboability is incredibly limited, having a maximum possible combo string of four hits by using X > Y > Z > Z while standing, or Z > Z > Z while standing, which both deal a large amount of damage; given that this is the only real way of racking up damage, as Pikachu lacks any Hypers or other methods of comboing, it makes Pikachu seem really incomplete and uninspired, even though the creator has stated that Pikachu is 90% complete,[1] despite lacking the majority of its Normal Attacks.

Pikachu has no A.I., meaning it uses the engine default. The creator has stated that Pikachu works well with the default A.I.,[1] though all it does it jump around and randomly use its attacks.
