Unfortunately, Claymizer's first attempt at creating a Sonic the Hedgehog character didn't go over so well. He had non-fluid animations, slightly overpowered moves, and many easy infinites. Despite this, he managed to be one of the more popular versions of Sonic at the time and tied most people over until a second version was created.

Gameplay[]

ClaySonic1Idle

Sonic The Hedgehog uses six buttons, where A, B, or C apply for kicks and X, Y, or Z apply for punches. Like the same creator's other characters, Sonic opts for gameplay loosely inspired by the Marvel vs. Capcom series. He seems to have fair chain comboing reminiscent of said game, however, due to the lack of a Launcher and a Super Jump, he is unable to preform Aerial Raves.

This version is rather unbalanced, due to his high damaging attacks, especially Super Wind, which only uses 1000 Power and it can be very damaging. It even stays on the screen for a long time, allowing Sonic to K.O. opponents very fast. Sonic has an infinite available regarding Sonic Wind, in which its safety allows it to be spammed, resulting in an easy, effortless victory and can maximize his Power bar quickly due to it giving 150 Power if it connects. Notably, this character is very slow, which is unfitting considering speed is Sonic's trademark skill. And for some reason, if the player cancels any of Sonic's Normals very quickly, the weaker one might fail to connect.

Sonic has five Specials and two Hypers. Spin Dash sees Sonic performing the spin dash and advancing forward, Uppercut shows Sonic advancing forward and then going up after advancing, and Slide also sees Sonic advancing forward, and if the move connects, Sonic trips the opponent. Sonic Wind sees Sonic firing a wind as a projectile that launches the opponent up if the move connects, while Jump Medium Kick, which is very likely supposed to be a Normal but is strangely attributed as a Special, shows Sonic performing a kick on his opponents. The latter is unblockable when close to the opponent due to it attacking on frame 1, and the move makes Sonic invincible on frames 2 and 3. Sonic Rush works similar to his Sonic's Spin Dash Special, but hits the opponent a bit more instead of three times, and Super Wind leaves a high wind on the stage for a while. If Super Wind is used three times at once, it can result in an untrue OHKO if they are not blocked due to how strong it is, but the opponent can easily avoid it by just crouching due to an error in the hitflag in the attack's HitDef. The same applies to Sonic Wind.

Sonic uses M.U.G.E.N's default A.I., which randomly jumps around rather than attacking. It doesn't seem to abuse any of Sonic's cheap aspects, making it an easy opponent.

Trivia[]

CMSonic-UnusedKnuckles
  • There are unused sprites of Knuckles in Sonic's sprite file depicting him curled up into a ball, standing, punching, and firing a beam from his hands, though the transparency colour is incorrect and they have not been cropped. It is not known what they were intended to be used for, but the selection of sprites and the way they're grouped imply he may have been planned as an assist.
  • Due to the Z variation of Spin Dash requiring 330 Power to use but not using any of it, it is likely that an EX variation of it was planned at some point in development, but none of Sonic's moves have EX variations.
