Marvel vs. Capcom (often abbreviated as MvC) is a series of fighting games developed by Capcom. As the name implies, the rosters of these games consist of both Capcom characters from franchises like Street Fighter and Mega Man, and Marvel characters lifted from Capcom's fighting games based on Marvel properties, such as Marvel Super Heroes and X-Men: Children of the Atom. As of 2021, there are currently four mainline games in the series that bear the Marvel vs. Capcom name, not counting rereleases or compilations.
Marvel vs. Capcom's gameplay style is fast-paced overall and has a heavy emphasis on combos, particularly aerial combos as every character has at least one Launcher attack (usually the standing 
) to launch opponents into the air and initiate an air combo, and a Super Jump (usually activated with 
) to jump very high into the air after the launcher attack. There is also an emphasis on Assist attacks, as the games allow each player to pick teams of characters that can be switched between at any time in the match, greatly expanding the potential combo ability of the player.
Marvel vs. Capcom is also used as a term with the M.U.G.E.N community used to describe any character that has similar gameplay mechanics to the series, even if they were not directly ported or originally from it. These mechanics include, but are not limited to:
- A Super Jump that is so tall that the stage needs to be about two times taller than normal to see them.
- Hyper Moves that require two punch or two kick buttons to be pressed to activate.
- Chain combos that escalate from light to heavy Normals and can often be alternated between punches and kicks in a "zig-zag" fashion depending on the character.
- Air combos, which can be started with a Launcher or meeting an opponent in the air, which function similarly to ground combos.
