Baiting

Buttercup using Super Uppercut to punish characters who attempt to jump in.

In fighting games, including M.U.G.E.N, baiting refers to using certain moves or movements in order to provoke the opponent into a certain reaction, and then punishing the opponent's reaction. A common example of this is whiffing a normal attack or a projectile in order to provoke the opponent into jumping, and then hitting the opponent with an anti-air attack.

Punishing can also refer to attacking the opponent while he or she is still in the recovery frames of a blocked or whiffed attack, usually moves with long recovery frames. A common example of this would be a Shoryuken, which gives the opponent plenty of time to attack the user after the attack is blocked.
